CONCLUSION

      Contrairement à l’ECT qui consiste en l’application d’une grande quantité de stimulation électrique à la totalité du cerveau conduisant ainsi à une crise comitiale généralisée, la SMTr offre une plus discrète augmentation ou diminution de la potentialisation électrique d’une zone cérébrale ou d’un réseau synaptique sans pose d’électrode et sans besoin d’anesthésie.

      Les plus solides données de la littérature sur la SMTr dans les syndromes neuro-psychiatriques sont retrouvées dans le traitement de la dépression, mais de plus en plus de recherches sont axées sur l’application de ces avancées obtenues dans les troubles de l’humeur à d’autres pathologies mentales comme par exemple la pathologie psycho-traumatique. L’éventualité que la stimulation du cortex préfrontal pourrait affecter l’activité cérébrale régionale associée avec la symptomatologie de l’ESPT (état de stress post-traumatique) a été le centre d’intérêt d’une petite étude pilote dans laquelle deux patients souffrant d’ESPT ont eu de la SMTr (Mc CANN et ses collaborateurs, 1998). Après la SMTr, le PET scan (Positron Emission Tomographie) à la fluorodeoxyglucose a montré une réduction dans son métabolisme par rapport aux valeurs d’avant la SMTr, qui étaient elles-mêmes plus haute que celles obtenues chez les populations en bonne santé référente, principalement à droite (voir ci-dessous les résultats du PET scan).
